I believe JMU's problem is the decision to switch subdivisions

is based on how it will benefit the academic side of the house. Silly JMU for thinking there is any place for academics in pro college football (TIC). But serious, there are reports out there that JMU could have joined the Sun Belt as a full member, but declined because the Sun Belt doesn't benefit JMU's recruiting effort of recruiting out-of-state students from the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions.

There was talk of JMU and Delaware joining the MAC as a football-only members. However, that was nixed because Delaware wasn't ready to give up its rivalry with Villanova and ultimately when the MAC decided it no longer wanted football-only members which prompted UMass to become an Independent. JMU has implicitly gone on the record to say if it is going to join a FBS conference as a full member, then that conference must have a large footprint in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. Honestly, I believe JMU's ideal plan is to be a MAC football-only member and A-10 or CAA member for all other sports. Once JMU leaves the CAA, then look for W&M to join the Patriot League for academic reasons.
